4. Quillan Home, Family & New Friends

Our stay here has been exceptional so far! Paulita and Earl are consummate hosts, included us on some social events with their friends, fed us lavishly at their home, and turned us on to lots of things to do and see around the Quillan area.

Want to see some of the things we like, or did, today here in Quillan? A little doofy, perhaps, but we like it. Explanations in the photo captions:

Tea and coffee at a local cafe. Sit and watch the people and pets go by. Unlike Paris, there are no crowds, this is laid-back for sure!

Our cafe street...looks like business is slow, huh? Well, turns out many of the "storefronts" are actually residences now, interesting mix of uses.

When shopping, you must bring your own bag, so we used a collapsible bag from an earlier trip, then stopped to see the castle ruin

Put your produce in the small paper bag before checking out, but not the candy bars
(a private joke)

Prettiest girl in town, next to the nicest hotel in town! Recently restored La Chaumieret

"Maison de Tourisme" = Tourist Office, in the old municipal public bath/shower house

How they fix upper floors and utilities on our street

Our butcher shop , advertising locally sourced cows!

One World Zero Waste ethic in action. No waste when shopping: small paper bag to select produce, reusable shopping bag suppllied by the customer

Our home is super too, we are lucky to have plenty of space to play, inside and outside. It's four stories, with our quarters on the third floor. The full kitchen and porch access are on the first floor, so we get a lot of practice using stairs: 45 steps each way! The river is scenic, its sounds lull us to sleep for naps and at bedtime. Nice to sit outside near the river...EXCEPT there are cats attached to the outside of the house, so forget accomplishing anything!

Paulita & Earl hosted a friend’s birthday party today, and invited us to meet everyone. What a nice day! Snacks, drinks, lasagna, and birthday cake accompanied lots of fun conversation, jokes, advice and political comparisons. Some of their friends are originally from UK, one from France, and us from USA, so lots to talk about. What a great way to spend an afternoon!

Lynn and I are hanging around the house this evening, with rain moving in. I’m trying to type this blog on our porch overlooking the Aude river, but cats are invading my personal space and Lynn is allowing it. Yikes, I’m overrun by wildlife! We’ll make small ham sandwiches for a light supper with the baguette I bought this morning at the Boulangerie, where I got the breakfast croissants. Everything is within close walking distance, no need to unpark the rental car today. Life is pretty good!
